Other Info
| Seki Zenjo-ke Chikanori [関善定家近則] was a desciple of Taikei Naotane [大慶直胤] , active in Mito during the late Edo period. Born in 1815, Kikuchi Toyosaburo Chikanori [近則] was the adopted son of Kawamura Kanzaburo [川村勘三郎], who called himself the fifth generation of Bando Taro Bokuden [坂東太郎卜伝], a swordsmith of the Seki Zenjo school, and took over Kanzaburo's sword making business, taking the name Zenjo-ke Chikanori [善定家近則]. In 1841, he became a disciple of Taikei Naotane [大慶直胤], who visited Hitachi Sukegawa Coast Defense Castle, and from 1841, he went to Edo for a year at the instruction of the domain's county official to study under Naotane again. He then worked as an official swordsmith for the Mito domain at the Shirahatayama Weapon Factory. This katana was ordered by Ebata family head, a retainer of Mito clan, in 1869, and is one of a masterpieces made by Chikanori at the peak of his maturity at age 54. It comes with a high-quality Uchigatana style koshirae with an Aogaimijini-nuri saya made specifically for this blade. This Chikanori katana is in the book of "Kurogane no Isho -Designs of swords - masterpieces of Mito swords and sword fittings [銕の意匠]", "Catalogue of the exhibition of famous swords from Ibaraki [茨城郷土の名刀展図録]", "100 sword stories [百剣百話]" and "My local swords [我が郷土刀]". It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2012. |
