Other Info
Kunitomo [国倫] was a swordsmith in Hirosaki, Mutsu Province, during the late Edo period. The two swordsmiths may have been related by the fact that the character "Tomo [倫]" is a common character in the name of the Suishinshi school " Ki Tomoyoshi from Hirosaki [弘前住紀倫賀]" from around the Keio period. The Hirosaki Domain, where the sword was made, governed the Tsugaru region of Mutsu Province, which is now the western part of Aomori Prefecture. During the late Edo period, the domain was tasked with guarding Ezo, and during the Boshin War, it joined the Oshu-Uetsu Reppan Dōmei (the Alliance of Feudal Lords), but withdrew and joined the new government forces. As a result, it suffered successive defeats against the Shonai and Morioka domains, but after the war it received an additional 10,000 koku. This sword was made during the turbulent period of Hirosaki in the year 1867, and was registered in Hokkaido. It was suriage, shortened by about 1sun 4bu (4.2 cm) to improve its operability. The forging is dense koitame grain, and the hamon pattern is a suguha resemble a Hizen sword. It comes with a Handachi style Koshirae with a black lacquer Isokusa pattern Saya. It has passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2023.
