| Ichige Genzaemon Tokurin [市毛源左衛門徳鄰] was born in 1777 in Hitachi Province. In 1794, he became a disciple of Kume Naganori [久米長徳], a samurai of the Mito Domain. Later, he became a disciple of Ozaki Suketaka [尾崎助高]. In 1809, he was appointed to become a Mito Domain swordsmith at the same time as Sukeyasu's fellow student Naoe Suketomo [直江助共]. In 1830, he went to Tokyo and received the title of Omi no Suke through the mediation of Iga no Kami Kinmichi. He died in 1835 at the age of 59. This sword has an unusual shape, with the mune side from the waist up being shaved off. It was probably a special order. The jigane has a finely koitame, and the hamon has a gentle notare with a thick nioikuchi. This is a rare sword by Tokurin, one of the best Mito Shinshin swordsmiths. It is an outstanding piece that fully shows Tokurin's feature. It was made at his age of 49, his mature period. The tanto was passed Hozon Token shinsa in 2004 and has been upgraded to the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinda in the December 2024 review. |
